DETAIL OF DELTING DISASTER MEMORIAL and GATE 21 DECEMBER 1900 1 B The "Delting Disaster" involved the loss of many "Open Shetland Model Sixareens that were fishing 30+ miles west of Shetland and caught in a storm. More than 200 men lost their lives.
Situated at the Mossbank Junction.
The gate to the Memorial is made from a huge slab of mahogany that was trawled up by a fishing boat 30 or 40 miles west of Shetland. It is thought to come from the keel of an old Spanish Galleon from way back in history. (A ship from the Spanish Armada perhaps?).
The timber was covered in barnacles, but when they were cleaned off, and the timber put through the saw, the wood was still in remarkable condition.
The gate was made by a local boat builder, Alan Moncrieff, after the timber was presented to him by the fishing boat crew. Mr Moncrieff was very impressed by the quality of the timber.

My great great grandfather Hugh Jamieson was among those who perished in this tragedy. Having visited my grandparents at the old White House in Toft for many summers when I was a schoolboy I was oblivious to this. This summer I will be visiting again and this place will be first on my list to visit. Looks beautiful; the story behind the gate is beautiful.
